Why get in touch with Counselling for Men?
Because illness and vulnerability threaten stereotypically masculine notions of competence, strength, autonomy, independence and vitality, many men experience emotional or psychological disturbances as personal flaws or as failures to successfully navigate life or demonstrate manhood.
As boys, men learn to hide their pain, distress and vulnerability. As adults, men may feel a loss of self-respect or shame if pain is revealed. This is especially relevant when wounds cannot be seen.
The reality of life is quite different from the all powerful, indestructible, superhuman fantasy of idealized masculinity found in twentieth century comic-books. The reality is:-
- At least four times as many men commit suicide than women.
- Twice as many men are dependent on alcohol than women.
- More males call ‘The Samaritans’ than females.
Men are primarily human beings with strengths, vulnerabilities, competences and needs who have been trained to restrict their behaviour by the perpetuation of social constructs that are no longer relevant.
In the twenty first century, everyone should be empowered to resolve their problems and to lead happier, more fulfilled lives.
