How can Counselling for Men help?

What it is:

  • Frank and open.
  • Practical, solution \ goal-orientated.
  • Collaborative.

What it is not:

  • Stiff or stuffy
  • Obtuse or covert
  • Overly interpretative

At CFM, the realities of men’s lives are valued. Clients are encouraged to speak plainly and without censorship. Humour, where appropriate, is seen as an important mechanism for forging a common understanding.

The approach used is derived from original academic research and the burgeoning literature on men and counselling. It has become apparent that many men live in the shadow of what they think they should be or do, whether it’s the person who carries all the burdens, the person who strives for success (in attempt to be the perfect provider) or the ultimate tough guy.

The myth that there is strength in silence has regrettably caused problems for men, their partners and many, many children. However, few would benefit from shouting their concerns from the roof tops. We recognise that many men would prefer to deal with issues discretely and so we place priority on confidentiality.

We are always keen to hear from men about their past experiences of therapy which may provide us with a greater understanding of what is and is not working for men in their troubled relationships with traditional psychotherapy.
